We have grown from 12 to 30 students in our third coding session of the year!
We are a coding club that is welcoming for all students at Papakura High School and the local community. We have a safe and friendly environment where students have the opportunity to enjoy learning to code using a variety of tools such as Grok Learning to code in Python and Minecraft for Education. Today we introduced Robotics where students were able to build a robot from scratch in 40 minutes. Janet Van from Kiwibots volunteered to help our students by providing this exciting opportunity. Janet is the national manager for Kiwibots. https://www.kiwibots.co.nz/
After speaking to the students they showed a keen interest in robotics. We are aiming to also attend competitions locally, nationally and who knows one day internationally!
Kia ora Koutou, We have been continuing to run the Papakura High Code Club virtually. Unfortunately I was unable to send out all the invitations to all the students who have been attending. We are treading on new ground and the positives for the lock-down create opportunity! We had some students attend this week and with the support of Code Club staff Siobhan O'connor we came up with a plan: The first thing we did was assign all code club members to Grok Learning a 'Space Invaders' game. If you attend the club next week I will be able to sign you up! Also we thought about creating a blog dedicated to the club and here it is! We are hoping to source merchandise from Code Club and present to members who complete the projects we set, together with a Code Club certificate. Some of these prizes are T-shirts and key-rings from the official Code Club Aotearoa - watch this space. Looking forward to seeing you next week. Satchet Singh
